When you really want to get away from it all take a boat to an island! In the middle of Pleasant Bay there is a 75 acer island with trails, beaches and marsh creaks to explore. It has plenty of wild life including deer, rabbits, birds and fish of all kinds. At first glance it looks to be a private island due to the large house on a bluff and the dock, but as you can see in the map below only a small part of the island is not public land.
You can only get to the island by boat but it is a short paddle from a small town beach directly to the east at the end of Strong Island rd. in Chatham. Be careful the current can be significant at times depending on the tide. The views are amazing especially from the west end of the island where the trail terminates at the top of a 30 ft bluff. The highest point is around 60 feet and affords a view to the south across the marsh and out the Chatham cut to the Atlantic. You can circumnavigate the island during lower tides or stay on the wide trails but everything else is poison ivy and thick under brush. the next time you find yourself on Pleasant Bay stop by Strong Island and enjoy the view.
